A Creative Contemporary Art from the Study of the Local Wisdom for Using Shapes in Mural Painting by Phetchaburi’s Artisans in Wat Koh

Abstract

The research “The Study of the Local Wisdom of Mural Painting by Phetchaburi’s Artisans” studies the local artisanal wisdom and aesthetics represented by the mural paintings in the “Ubosot” (the main temple hall) of Wat Koh. The art has the unique “Phetchaburi” style that can be inherited by the next generation of artisans in the province. The focus is primarily on the images, which depict scenes from Lord Buddha's life, inside the hall. The overall composition and the particular forming of the lines, colors and shapes of these images are distinguished from Buddhist paintings elsewhere. The details of the artistic elements and craftsmanship inspire awe in the visitor-beholders, The paintings also convey certain religious meanings and philosophical truths. The use of the vast, simple space is comparable to the style of contemporary art design and knowledge management.
