Nationality is significant because it provides a legal framework binding an individual to a state or a nation state. One of the essential elements of a state is that it has çcitizens.é It is important for individuals to have a nationality because citizenship confers rights, duties and liabilities under state law. In principle, the state has a duty to protect its citizens. Stateless people have neither rights nor duties, and cannot access any rights at all, even fundamental human rights. Furthermore, due to their unofficial status, they cannot declare their working status to the authorities, and therefore suffer from poor working conditions and unfair wages. They are abused and taken advantage of by other people, unable to participate in political activities, denied permission to work within the civil service, and so on. More than one hundred thousand stateless people reside in Thailand. They have a poor quality of life, and live impoverished lives beneath the notice of the state. The issue of stateless people is one that should be solved directly by the state. It is important that we consider this problem with mercy, hospitality and unselfishness.
