DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPETENCY MODEL OF COMMERCIAL PILOTS IN THAILAND

Abstract

This research is a descriptive research with the objective to develop a competency model of commercial pilots of commercial aviation business. The Delphi technique was used in studying and collecting conforming opinions of experts. The research population comprised experts on human resource management in commercial aviation business consisting of executives on human resource development for commercial pilots, Department of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Communication; executives on training and development of commercial airlines; executive of the Commercial Aviation Training Center, i.e. the Civil Aviation Training Center, the Aviation Training Center of the Royal Thai Air Force, the Private Aviation Training Center, the Educational Institution offering the Commercial Pilot License Program, the instructor pilots, and the senior pilots. The research sample consisting of 12 persons were purposively selected based on the research objectives. Research findings showed that there were four functional competency models of commercial pilots. The first model was the character and personality model which was composed of 6 items: (1) the keeping of discipline, (2) the self-conduct, (3) the human relationship, (4) the cooperation and teamwork, (5) the punctuality, and (6) the honesty. The second model was the capability model which was composed of 3 items: (1) the leadership, (2) the self-development, and (3) the communication skills. The third model was the work performance behavior which was composed of 7 items: (1) the responsibility, (2) the work performance capability, (3) the industriousness and enthusiasm, (4) the coordination, (5) the creativity, (6) the decision making, and (7) the planning. The last model was the performance outcome model which was composed of 5 items: (1) the productive quantity, (2) the productive quality, (3) the punctuality of delivery, (4) the cost-effectiveness of using resources, and (5) the practicable achievement. Thus, this research had accomplished the development of a competency model of commercial pilots in Thailand.
