A HYBRID NARRATION AND CARTOON CHARACTERIZATION IN “THE MASK SINGER”

Abstract

This article aims to present analysis guidelines of the TV Show “The Mask Singer”. Based on the framework of narration and characterization, the Show is found to have characteristics of the “Hybrid Show” which combines the variation of narrative styles and blend them altogether until it presents the new presentation style to the audiences. The key success points are as follows: (1) to blend the variety of narration styles and combine the genres especially for the mystery, fantasy and comedy, and the different types of TV shows of singing contest, game show, talk show, and drama series; and (2) the Show transforms the singer in singing contests to be the “characters” with different outer images and also designs the distorted shape and proportion just like the method of cartoon characterization by using the mask and outfits of the competitors. The creation of characters will also help to further make the value added to the producer that can be applied for the commercial purpose.
