The Perceptions of Thai Millennial Generation Tourists on the Concept of Sustainable Tourism

Abstract

The objectives of this research were (1) to study the travel behaviors of Thai millennial generation tourist group in Thailand, as divided into 3 sub-groups by age range: 16-23 years old, 24-30 years old, and 31-35 years old, and (2) to study the perceptions of Thai millennial generation tourist group in Thailand on the concept of sustainable tourism. The samples for this research were 508 purposively selected Thai millennial generation tourists. Data were analyzed with the use of the frequency, mean, standard deviation, t-test, F-test, and chi-square test. The study results showed that (1) the research samples in different age range groups differed significantly in their favorite tourism types; and (2) the sample group had the moderate level of perceptions on the concept of sustainable tourism; when personal data of the samples were considered, it was found that the samples in different age range groups differed significantly in their perceptions on the concept of sustainable tourism in the aspect of conservation and utilization of tourist resources for sustainability; the samples with different educational levels differed significantly in their perceptions on the concept of sustainable tourism in the aspect of gaining benefits from sustainable tourism; the samples with different domiciles differed significantly in their perceptions on the concept of sustainable tourism in the aspect of information provision and public relations concerning sustainable tourism; and the samples with different statuses differed significantly in their perceptions on the concept of sustainable tourism in the aspects of gaining benefits from sustainable tourism, and conservation and utilization of tourist resources for sustainability.  The results from this research could be applied for planning on communication of the sustainable tourism concept and for planning on organizing tourism activities to respond to the behaviors of this tourist group.
