The diplomatic relations between the two nations over the past 60 years
(1947-2007) has experienced its ups and downs due to the influences of the
international environment and the domestic factors. The first ten years of the

cordial and friendly. But the Cold War tension slowly affected both countries and
finally the relations between them.
After the Cold War the relationship between Thailand and India reached a
new era when they started the rapprochement. The bilateral relations are advancing
very strongly in every aspect. Thailand recognizes the increasing role played by India in
the world stage. India’s “Look East” policy and Thailand’s “Look West” policy have
substantially complimented each other over the years.
In the beginning of the 21st century as India emerged as a major economic
power and the rise of the so-called Thaksinomic in Thailand, it can be highlighted that
the relationship between both countries is stepping up to the new era especially in
the aspect of trading which has been upgraded to the modem economic cooperation.
This new era of economic cooperation between India and Thailand started in October,
2003 with the free trade agreement between both countries. The relationships
between the two countries will be further strengthened through their multilateral
cooperation. Thailand and India play an important role in the multilateral stages due
to their potentials in terms of population, resources and consumer markets. The
multilateral cooperation, such as BIMSTEC, MGC, ACD, ARF will help promoting
economic cooperation and partnership, and also the study found that Thai foreign
policies towards India since the 21st century helped Thailand to gain her national
interest, especially in the economic field, through the harmonious relationships with
India under the “Look East” and “Look West” policies and to achieve the goal,
namely the “Complementary Interest” between Thailand and India. Thailand’s ‘Look
West’ policy and India’s ‘Look East’ policy have become a perfect complement to
one another and the relations between the two countries has grown both bilaterally
and in the context of enhanced interaction with and within regional frameworks.
