Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to 1) survey data on the causes of undergraduate student attrition. 2) identify and analyze factors leading to attrition of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science and Technology, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, during the academic years 2018–2022. A sample of 2,544 students was used. Data collection and analysis were performed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including percentages, means, standard deviations, correlations, and Pearson's product moment correlation coefficients.
The results revealed that the causes of attrition of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science and Technology during the academic years 2018–2022 exhibited a positive relationship with a statistical significance level of 0.01. The top three reasons with the highest mean and correlation level were: 1) attrition based on academic evaluation regulations, which showed a very high correlation (r = 0.992, P-value = 0.00);
2) attrition based on financial regulations, which showed a high correlation (r = 0.822, P-value = 0.00); and
3) attrition due to resignation. This correlation was high (r = 0.741, P-value = 0.00). Furthermore, the majority of students dropped out during their first year, followed by their second and third years, respectively.
The results of this study indicate that the three main causes of student dropouts can be used as input for policy formulation, planning, and the development of proactive academic management measures to effectively prevent and reduce the number of students dropping out of the Faculty of Science and Technology programs in the future.
