The studying of a Chatri drama theatrical performance "Teng Tuk" from S. Bua Noi Band, Chanthaburi

Abstract

This research aimed at studying Lakhon Chatri "Teng Tuk" Theatrical Performance of S.Bua Noi band in Chanthaburi Province. The purposes of this research were as follows: 1) to study the history from past to present and 2) to investigate compositions and forms from past to presents  of Lakhon Chatri drama "Teng Tuk" from S.Bua Noi band, Pak Nam Laem Sing Subdistrict, Laem Sing District, Chanthaburi Province.

               The result of this study indicated that Lakhon Chatri S S.Bua Noi band has been established from the south of Thailand passed on the knowledge to Tim Pakakit, and he then performed in Chanthaburi Province. Mr.Tim Pakakit’s band was regarded as the first band of Lakhon Chatri named Grandfather Tim band. Later, Mr.Tim’s descendants have founded many drama troupes with different names. Mr.Tim’ fourth generation descendant was Mrs. Boonruen Soisri who became a band leader and named the band “S.Bua Noi” band. The important element of performance is a theater which can be watched from 3 sides of the theater. A forest scene is the band’s uniqueness. Stories which are used to perform are folk tales and newly created stories added with folk performances. The musical instruments are consisted of tone chatri drump, tuk drums, small cymbals, cymbals, wooden rhythm clappers, and mixed with alto, xylophones.  Costumes have been applied in accordance with changing times including fully decorated attires (the complete look of Thai traditional dramatic performance), Traditional musical folk drama’s costumes and applied musical folk drama’s clothes. Moreover, ancient songs yet remain to be sung in S.Bua Noi band. The costumes will be changed based on the performing stories which are a traditional performance and an applied performance.

               The finding pointed out that the traditional performance of Lakhon Chatri “teng Tuk” is rarely seen due to many factor. First, it is hard to sing dramatic music. Second, people are more interested in a performance of musical folk drama or even times have changed. Consequently, the performance of Lakhon Chatri “Teng Tuk” Band needs to be changed to suit with modern times in order to interest audience once again. Therefore, it appropriate to preserve Lakhon Chartri “Teng Tuk” to be with Chanthaburi Province and Thail society.
