Tendency for Return Migration of Migrant Workers after Myanmar Reform

Abstract
This research paper studies the tendency of return migration of non-skill laborers from Myanmar. This paper aims: (1) to investigate whether non-skill Burmese workers in Thailand desire to migrate back to their home country, or at least have a plan to do so, (2) To analyze the causes affecting Burmese migrant workers either to stay in Thailand or to return to their country of origin, and (3) to suggest some observations and to provide policy recommendations for related organizations. The present study finds that most Burmese workers interviewed in this study do not have a plan to migrate back to Myanmar in a near future (1-2 years). There are two key reasons. Firstly, they do not trust the situation in Myanmar. In other words, Burmese workers do not find political, economic and social context in Myanmar is stable enough. The opportunity in terms of economic and employment is lower than in Thailand. They believe that they will not able to find jobs with good pay comparing to what they currently earn. Last, but not the least, Burmese migrant workers still want to accumulate resources, both in terms of capital and knowledge/skills in order to be able to start their career in Myanmar. The second reason is social welfare such as education and health services they received in Thailand especially education for their children.
