Abstract

In urban areas, old railway corridors are often abandoned or underutilized, limiting their potential despite their historical significance in transportation and city development. Transforming these spaces into public green areas is a crucial landscape architectural approach that integrates cultural heritage conservation with modern urban needs, maximizing community benefits.

This study explores guidelines for transforming the old railway corridor between Hua Lamphong and Bang Sue stations into a public green space. The proposed approach merges cultural heritage conservation with adaptive land use strategies, ensuring a balance between historical and contemporary elements. Key considerations include historical, socio-cultural, economic, and environmental factors to support sustainable urban development.

Findings indicate that the railway corridor has strong potential for redevelopment as a linear park that 1) connects key districts, 2) promotes green mobility through pedestrian and bicycle networks, and 3) enhances urban environmental quality by increasing green spaces. The development approach encompasses two key components:1) heritage and community conservation, which involves the restoration of historical elements, community engagement, and eco-friendly infrastructure; and 2) innovation and connectivity, focusing on a green network that links urban districts, promotes multi-functional land use, and incorporates ecological infrastructure. Preserving railway components and station structures maintains historical identity while adapting them for modern urban needs, fosters community-driven economic growth, and improves public life. This approach underscores the role of landscape architecture in urban revitalization and offers a model for repurposing old railway corridors across Thailand to support conservation-based urban development.
