Patterns of Urban Public Space for an Active Aging Society: A Case Study of Roi Et City
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines patterns of urban public space to support an active-aging society, using a case study of Roi Et city. The data were collected from 400 elderly people aged 60-79 years, using a quantitative research approach with structured questionnaires. Accidental sampling was used to collect data in the Bueng Phalan Chai public park. For quantitative data analysis, descriptive statistics and analytical methods such as the t-test and multiple regression were employed. The findings revealed that most active elderly people prefer to use the Bueng Phalan Chai public space for exercise (49.10%) and recreation (37.70%), aligned with the active aging concept. The public space patterns that correspond to the usage behavior of the active aging community in Roi Et city reflect activities primarily requiring physical exertion, particularly jogging and walking, in the island area and the surrounding zones of Bueng Phalan Chai. Passive activities play a supporting role in public space utilization, particularly in the outdoor plaza and resting areas around Roi Et Tower for relaxation and social gatherings of the active elderly community. The most influential factors affecting the usage of Bueng Phalan Chai public space include activities and facilities (B=0.86, t=14.834), accessibility and mobility (B=0.72, t=14.575), and environmental quality and aesthetics (B=0.40, t=8.592), all statistically significant at the 0.000 level. These findings provide important information to propose guidelines for developing age-friendly public spaces in Roi Et city in the future.
