Abstract

This study examines the characteristics of cement composites produced with the mixing of varying ratios of crumb rubber and natural rubber latex‚ and the interrelationship between density‚ water absorption and compressive strength in response to porosity. The used proportions are 1:1‚ 1:2.5 and 1:4 cement to crumb rubber‚ and 1:0‚ 1:0.1‚ 1:0.2 and 1:0.3 water to latex solution. The physical and mechanical properties‚ such as density‚ water absorption and compressive strength‚ were assessed.

The experimental results revealed that increasing the proportions of crumb rubber  and natural latex led to higher porosity and water absorption, while density and compressive strength significantly decreased. This relationship can be explained through the concept of porosity-driven performance, indicating that porosity is a key factor governing material properties. Compared with industrial product standards, the mixture with a 1:1 ratio (T1) exhibited compressive strength values of 8.9–10 MPa, water absorption below 10%, and a density of approximately 1500 kg/m³, demonstrating suitable properties for lightweight concrete block applications. In contrast, mixtures containing higher proportions of crumb rubber  are more appropriate for non-load-bearing applications or thermal insulation materials.

The above work studied the performance of recycled rubber-based composites as a sustainable alternative to conventional construction materials‚ whereby the mechanical properties of the composites can be tailored to suit different applications by varying the porosity during the manufacturing process.
