Abstract

Hospital service circulation routes play a critical role in the delivery of food, medication, medical supplies, and various materials necessary to ensure the smooth, safe, and rapid medical services operation. However, studies focusing on the physical characteristics of these service circulation areas remain limited. Proper design that aligns with service operational workflows could potentially reduce operational obstacles and alleviate the physical burden placed on staff members. Therefore, this research aims to study the food transportation process and analyze the physical characteristics of hospital circulation spaces that impact staff performance. A qualitative research methodology was employed, consisting of architectural analysis and field surveys combined with shadow observations of staff operations.

The preliminary findings reveal 10 key steps in the hospital food transportation process across both case studies and demonstrate how physical characteristics impact operations. It was found that the  architectural layout of the hospital significantly affects transportation distance, routing, and the overall food service logistics model. When comparing the two cases, Case Study A, characterized by a multi-building pavilion layout, require a food delivery route that was over 290 meters longer per round than Case Study B, which is a single-integrated building layout. Furthermore, the architectural components and physical characteristics of the circulation spaces that significantly impact safety and the physical burden of the food delivery staff comprise uncovered outdoor pathways between buildings, ramps, and fire doors.

This study underscores the importance of considering physical characteristics of the hospital, particularly its service circulation areas, alongside route planning and food service logistics management in private hospitals. The findings from this research can be further utilized to investigate design factors for other hospital service circulation spaces, ensuring they align with operational requirements in the future.
