The Development of English Reading Comprehension and Critical Thinking Abilities of Grade 9 Students Using KWL Plus Technique with Graphic Organizers

Abstract

This research aimed to develop the English reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities of grade 9 students using the KWL Plus Technique with Graphic Organizer with 70% criteria. The target group included 38 people of grade 9 students at the school in Khon Kaen province, in the academic year 2021, by purposive sampling. The research instruments were the lesson plans using the KWL Plus Technique with Graphic Organizer, the English reading comprehension ability test, and the critical thinking ability test. Quantitative data was analyzed using the arithmetic mean (), standard deviation (S.D.) and percentage (%). Qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. The results summarized: The students had average scores of the English reading comprehension ability of 25.13 out of 32 or 78.53 of the total scores, and there was 28 students or 73.68 passing the criteria, which was higher than the defined criteria. The students had average scores of the critical thinking ability of 22.92 out of 30 or 76.40 of the total scores, and there was 28 students or 73.68 passing the criteria, which was higher than the defined criteria.
