The Working Process of Performance Making with Digital Media Technology in An Experimental Performance (DEATH STUDIES)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aims to analyze the creative process of integrating digital media technology with stage performance, ensuring the integrity of the performance while enhancing expressive possibilities. The objective is to investigate the methodologies of directors and actors involved in performances utilizing digital media technology, including preparation, rehearsal, experimentation with acting techniques, and interaction with motion graphics, which operate as animated visual effects that create movement and optical animated visual effects. The study also examines the contributions of various creative teams, such as Motion Graphic Designers, Lighting Designers, Sound Designers, Scene Designers, and Costume Designers. This study employs a practice-based research model through the creation of four stage plays as part of the Death Studies experimental drama project. These include “As Above So Below”, “Trip”, “Loops” which were designed and created by volunteers, as well as “Doppelgänger (2023)” which was designed, written, and directed by
the researcher. Following each performance, data was collected through interviews with 15 directors and actors who participated in the project as volunteers. The research findings highlight the importance of directors and actors having a thorough understanding of the role and significance of visual content. Balancing the use of digital media with other elements of the performance is crucial to ensure that physical movement on stage remains uninhibited. Digital visuals serve as supportive tools, enhancing the essence of the performance without overshadowing it. The director plays a key role in determining the overall concept and overseeing the integration of visual elements, timing, spatial utilization, and performer movements. Performers must interpret the meaning of visual elements which can enhance the emotional impact of each character, auditory, and lighting cues, forging connections and eliciting responses.
