SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES FOR CHIANGSAEN ANCIENT CITY AND CONNECTED AREAS BELONGING TO THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN CHIANGRAI BORDER SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE

Abstract
This research is an applied research involving both qualitative and quantitative methods, with objectives to explore the touristic capabilities of Chiangsaen Ancient City and connected areas belonging to the local government in Chiangrai border special economic zone, to establish sustainable tourism development strategies for Chiangsaen Ancient City and connected areas belonging to the local government in Chiangrai border special economic zone, and to evaluate the suitability of the sustainable tourism development strategies for Chiangsaen Ancient City and connected areas belonging to the local government in Chiangrai border special economic zone using qualitative and quantitative methods by means of operational meeting, questionnaire and suitability evaluation form. The target group consisted of 64 individuals.
The following strengths were observed regarding the touristic capabilities of Chiangsaen Ancient City and connected areas belonging to the local government in Chiangrai border special economic zone: the ancient city status; cultural, traditional and ethnic diversity thanks to Lanna and other cultures; and favorable geographic features and climate. The observed weaknesses include: incomplete factual information for tourists with regard to the history, database management, and insufficient signage; lack of opportunities provided by the government's policy regarding support for tourism as the main source of revenue; and nonexistent or unclear data in the province itself as well as the neighboring countries, with insufficient management from the government to connect local and international databases.
Sustainable tourism development strategies for Chiangsaen Ancient City and connected areas belonging to the local government in Chiangrai border special economic zone adopts the vision "Chiangsaen paradise (beautiful, peaceful, safe and joyful)" with 5 strategic points including decent and safe local attraction development, collaboration encouragement among neighboring countries to diversity tourism, peaceful, joyful and warm tourism development, informational technology improvement for tourism enhancement in the ancient city and adjacent areas, and collaboration establishment for sustainable local tourism management.
From the suitability evaluation, the sustainable tourism development strategies for Chiangsaen Ancient City and connected areas belonging to the local government in Chiangrai border special economic zone are considered highly suitable in the aspects of vision, objectives, strategic points and development strategies.
