A STUDY ON THE ADAPTATION OF ANAM NIKAYA TEMPLES OF MAHAYANA IN KANCHANABURI PROVINCE TO BE PROMOTED AS A COMMUNITY CENTER

Abstract
This research aimed to study the adaptation and factors that led to adaptation of Mahayana Buddhist temples in Kanchanaburi province to promote themselves as a community center in terms of governance, religion education, welfare education, propagation, public facilities, and public welfare. The data were collected from all Anam Nikaya temples in Kanchanaburi province including Taworn Wararam temple, Tham Khao Noi temple, and Charoenboonpaisan temple, followed by 3 groups of interviews of 27 participants including monks, temple board committee or temple officials, and Buddhists who regularly attended the ritual at those temples.
The research results revealed that Anam Nikaya temples in Kanchanaburi province had adapted themselves to be a community center in all aspects. Anam Nikaya temples located in the community adapted themselves in a similar way in several aspects such as governance, religion education, welfare education. The adaptation was significantly different from temples located far away from community. In terms of factors leading to adaptation, it was found that Anam Nikaya temples had both similar and different supportive factors and obstacles in each aspect. The overall mutual factors leading to adaptation of Anam Nikaya temples were leaders and community participation. Meanwhile, the obstacles to adaptation included personal behavior and learning management in the temples.
