Abstract

This research aims to study and analyze jazz compositions for worship from the “Jazz Mass” by Ike Sturm which consist of 7 songs, Kyrie, Gloria, Just as I am, Sanctus, Our Father, Agnus Dei, and Shine. The analysis reveals that concepts, techniques and important elements of composing the worship songs in “Jazz Mass” by Ike Sturm are 1) Use of mode to create feeling of Brightness and Darkness inspired by Maria Schneider 2) Use of major#11 chord 3) Use of repetition as background 4) Key changes and modulations 5) Use of strings to create various atmospheric background 6) Sudden change of ensemble type 7) Improvisation 8) Use of pedal Point.
