Abstract

This research aims to study textile printing innovations and pattern designs inspired by the art and beliefs of Japanese culture, with the objective of creating patterns on Happi coats through innovative printing techniques. The research methodology was divided into four phases: Step 1 involved designing patterns based on culturally auspicious symbols in Japanese beliefs, such as koi fish, foxes, cherry blossoms, and Mount Fuji. Step 2 focused on experimenting with various textile printing innovations. Step 3 consisted of arranging the designed patterns onto the Happi coat, and Step 4 involved the development of a prototype product.

This study resulted in a total of 15 pattern designs, created based on the conceptual framework. These were evaluated and selected by a panel of five experts. The five most selected designs were: 1) Spirit of Japan, 2) Long Couple, 3) Fuji’s Curator, 4) Sunset Emotion, and 5) Guardian of japan Printing experiments were conducted on three types of fabric: Duchess satin, Tore fabric, and cotton. The results indicated that Duchess satin was the most suitable material. The sublimation printing technique yielded consistent colour distribution; Flex Foil printing adhered well to the fabric surface; and UV printing provided clear, vivid results with strong responsiveness to UV light. As for the placement of the patterns on the Happi coat, the optimal position was identified based on traditional Japanese cultural practices. It was concluded that the center back panel of the garment was the most appropriate location, as it prominently displayed the design, effectively conveyed the concept, and aligned with traditional Happi coat design principles.
