The Significance of Thayae

Abstract

This qualitative research investigates the significance, roles, and functions of theeight compositions within the Phleng Thayae suite. The study further examines the structural components, pentatonic scale groups, and rhythmic idioms, analyzing these elements to articulate the fundamental essence of the repertoire.

The findings reveal that the significance of Phleng Thayae is characterized by six primary dimensions: 1) musical evolution manifested through five distinct patterns; 2) unique melodic repetition, particularly individualized in the second movement; 3) the integration of both authentic and latent Mon stylistic accents; 4) a systematic and idiosyncratic method of vocal-instrumental response; 5) the sophisticated concealment of pentatonic scale structures; and 6) the strategic and purposeful placement of rhythmic
cadences (Luk Tok). Collectively, these elements demonstrate the profound and ingenious nature of the suite's composition. Phleng Thayae is thus identified as a highly valuable repertoire that encapsulates advanced musicological knowledge and the intricate artistry of Thai classical music.
