Abstract

This research aimed to (1) investigate design approaches for a DIY reed weaving kit and (2) design and produce a DIY reed weaving kit. A creative research methodology was applied through document review and field studies of traditional community-based reed weaving looms. Content analysis was used to define design guidelines. Three-dimensional (3D) models were developed to determine proportions and test usability, followed by sketch development and 3D prototyping. The designs were evaluated using a product design evaluation form by three purposively selected experts in loom production and Chanthaboon reed weaving.

The results showed that the designed DIY reed weaving kit had appropriate dimensions, was portable, and could be used for actual weaving. Warp tension issues were resolved through structural modification. Design prototype No. 3 achieved the highest suitability score (mean = 4.66). The prototype was produced using rambutan and mangosteen wood from agricultural pruning, with loom dimensions of 200 × 290 × 100 mm and a reed size of 80 × 200 × 17 mm, using plastic thread and small-sized reeds.

The design outcome provides a DIY weaving kit prototype that can be further developed as a souvenir product, supporting learning, knowledge transmission of Chanthaboon reed weaving local wisdom, and sustainable income generation for the community enterprise.
