Global Professional Standards and Qualifications in Performing Arts: Guidelines for Establishing Khon Performance Standards in Thailand

Abstract

This research examines and reviews professional standards and qualifications in the performing arts based on internationally recognized systems. The study focuses on case studies of British ballet dancers, Chinese opera performers, and Japanese Noh theater actors. Additionally, it analyzes the context and influencing factors of Khon in Thai society to explore the feasibility of establishing a standardized professional qualification system for Khon performers. The research employs qualitative methods, including document analysis, case studies, and expert interviews in the field of performing arts.

The findings reveal that professional standards in performing arts vary depending on the cultural context of each country. However, they all emphasize structured training programs, competency assessment systems, and standardized qualification certifications, which help enhance both performer quality and the preservation of artistic traditions. In Thailand, Khon is supported through conservation efforts and training under the Fine Arts Department, but no centralized qualifying certification system exists. Developing a standardized framework similar to international organizations, such as the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) for ballet, could contribute to the structural development of Khon and create more career opportunities for performers. This research can be applied as a knowledge base for the development of professional competencies of Kho performers in alignment with international contexts, particularly in the formulation of occupational standards and the certification of professional qualifications in accordance with the standards of the Professional Qualifications Institute.
