Contemporary Performing Arts and Sustainable Design

Abstract

This article examines the integration of sustainable design concepts in contemporary performing arts. It focuses on two main aspects: (1) exploring the interconnections between contemporary performance and sustainable design through the application of design principles in performance creation, particularly in the use of environmentally friendly materials; and (2) analyzing the development and promotion of sustainable design practices in performance production—specifically the processes of using recycled materials in costume, set, stage, props, and lighting design—to reduce energy consumption and enable reusability in artistic works. The study employed document review and policy analysis related to creative and sustainability frameworks, along with an examination of selected contemporary performance festivals reporting outcomes in material use, energy efficiency, and recycling practices. The findings indicate that (1) the use of renewable materials such as natural fibers, recycled textiles, reclaimed wood, and modular sets facilitates reuse and end-of-life management; (2) choreographic approaches emphasizing bodily expression reduce dependence on large-scale props; and (3) lighting strategies that employ LED fixtures, systematic cue planning, and efficient power budgeting help minimize energy consumption without diminishing the aesthetic or expressive quality of performance.
