The Creation of Thai Performing Arts Thesis During the Coronavirus 2019 Pandemic

Abstract

This academic article is part of the thesis entitled “The Creation of Thai Performing Arts Thesis during the Coronavirus 2019 Pandemic.” It aims to analyze teaching and learning management and adaptations in the creation of Thai dance senior projects at higher education institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected, analyzed, and synthesized from relevant documents and interviews, using seven higher education institutions in Bangkok as case studies: Chulalongkorn University, Srinakharinwirot University, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, Phranakhon Rajabhat University, Dhonburi Rajabhat University, and Chandrakasem Rajabhat University.

The findings indicate that, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Thai dance senior projects were primarily presented as live stage performances. Restrictions on teaching, rehearsals, gatherings, and performances led to three adapted modes of presentation: 1) dance films, 2) recorded performance videos, and 3) live stage performances when the situation improved. These adaptations generated knowledge on integrating dance with digital technology. In particular, dance film creation required the integration of movement design, performance space, camera angles, visual composition, and editing, reflecting a shift in the creative process from stage-based performance to digital media. This knowledge can be applied to the development of dance education, creative practice, and the dissemination of dance works, while also providing an approach for responding to future crises and technological changes.
