Portugal Cultural Transmission to Siam and Cultural Legacy in Ayutthaya Province

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the role, the pattern of culture
transmission between Portugal and Siam and the Portuguese cultural legacy
in Ayutthaya. The results showed that the diplomatic relation of Siam and
Portugal began their official relationship in 1511. In addition trade, religion
and support of military operation bring about their settlements, cultural
heritage and military technology. Following the arrival of Portugal,
Ayutthaya had utilized to made brick fortresses and city wall, Portuguese
volunteers joining King Chairacha’s army in the Chiang Kran combat against
Burma. In turn, the King were given crucial prize - the allocation of land
and consent to build houses and 3 Catholic Churches - the Dominicans,
the Franciscans and Jesuits of San Paolo. Within their settlement, two sites
of Catholic Churches - the Dominicans and the Jesuit church were
excavated, the remaining sections of the tree city walls the southern side
of Priding - Thamrong Bridge, Hua Raw market and foreside of Wat Yan
Sen, the two remaining sites of fortress are Pom Phet and Pom Khao Pluak.
The Portuguese settlers were married to local women and descended
lineage. Moreover, they introduced language, music and sweets to Siam
that remains in the present day.
