Abstract

The doctoral music composition: “Mantramanhora” Songs Cycle for Solo Soprano, Baritone, Chorus and Chamber Ensemble, is the program music based on Southern Legendary folklore. This creative music research aims at composing music in the form of song cycle for the music is integrated Western and Southern Thai music philosophy and patterns song cycle form whereby all the contemporary composing knowledge aspects have been utilized from qualitative research method as the approach. Having been inspired by Manhora’s ethinic performing art of Southern Thailand and Malaysia, the lyric is in south local dialect. Meanwhile, neither the music nor the singing style can be improvised ornamentation. The creative work consisted of 12 songs and is written for Soprano, Baritone, being accompanied and highlighted by piano, chorus and strings; violin, viola, cello and double bass as an ensemble. Total Length of the music is approximately 40 minutes. The structure is defined and composing style is one of principles of contemporary music composition. Moreover, this work, distribution of aesthetic in music and folk literature is in new form. It will be useful and will broaden the development of music education in song cycle or lied form. Finally, Mantramanhora is to disseminate, inherit, conserve and continue Thai culture to exist by presenting the beauty of traditional southern culture to the world, the music can potentially be touched new generation heart and be appreciated worldwide, especially ASEAN listeners.
