The Identity Development of Cultural Tourism Resources in Theparak Subdistrict Municipality to Promote a Modern and Sustainable Image

Abstract

This research aims to (1) study and collect data on the story of and information about the community of Thepharak subdistrict municipality, (2) study the strengths and potentials of cultural tourism of Thepharak subdistrict municipality, (3) investigate guidelines for identity development of cultural tourism resources in Theparak subdistrict municipality to promote a modern and sustainable image. The study was muti-method research under the qualitative research paradigm of case study approach methodology collecting the data with in-depth interviews with 19 representatives of the local community and government sectors in Thepharak subdistrict municipality, along with the use of participation observation techniques, and focus group discussions with 18 people of government sectors. The results found that (1) the word "Thepharak" is originated from the words "Thep" and "rak" or "raksa," which relate to the order of reciting the Thep or angelic protectors of the area, followed by the release of forgotten Khmer art by the Thevada statue, (2) the potential of cultural tourism resouces consists of five main components; (2.1) tradition and activities, (2.2) food, (2.3) handiwork, (2.4) exported livestock, and  (2.5) trade, and (3) the historical background of the name Thepharak is a crucial element in the tourism policy and economic development of the area from collaboration of entrepreneurs as well as designing tourism activities that benefit society; the original handiwork, local food menu, and environment protection.
