Stance and Stance-taking of The Mass Media about Sex Workers in Thai Public Discourse

Abstract

This research was to analyzed Stance-taking in mass media representations of sex worker (SW) in Thai public discourse. Data was collected from news articles about SWs published in online daily newspaper websites from 2017 to 2023, a period of 7 years, totaling 7 websites.  Results indicated three types of stance classification: 1) epistemic; 2) attitudinal; and 3) stylistic. Each used different linguistic strategies to present stances of diverse groups, including government agencies, the mass media, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), SWs, and citizens as perspectives from: a) government agencies with a positive view of SWs; b) government agencies with a negative view of SWs; c) NGOs with a positive view of SWs; d) NGOs with a negative view of government agencies and society; e) SWs with a negative view of government and society; f) citizens with a positive view of SWs; g) citizens with a negative view of SWs; h) citizens with a negative view of government agencies and society; i) mass media with a positive view of SWs; and j) mass media with a negative view of SWs.
