Abstract

This research examines the beliefs and meanings reflected through the use of Bai-Si by the people of the Isan region along the Mekong River. Qualitative research methods were employed, including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and literature review. Content analysis and interpretation were conducted based on the structural-functionalism theory, local wisdom concepts, cultural reproduction concepts, and cultural dynamism concepts. The findings reveal that the beliefs about Bai-Si integrate traditional beliefs about the Naga with Buddhism, with Bai-Si serving as a medium connecting humans with supernatural powers. The creation of Bai Sri reflects the wisdom and craftsmanship of local artisans, fostering community participation and strengthening relationships. The beliefs and roles of Bai-Si have a dynamic nature that adapts to socio-cultural contexts and are transmitted through the process of socialization. Bai-Si holds significance as a cultural symbol with dynamics linked to beliefs, rituals, artisanal wisdom, and way of life. Beyond being a socio-cultural capital, it also reflects the wisdom in maintaining local identity amidst change. The findings highlight the importance of promoting and preserving this wisdom heritage through participatory processes and raising awareness of the value of local culture among the younger generation to ensure the enduring value and adaptability of the Bai-Si culture in Isan.
