Abstract

           This rcscarch airned to develop translation skills ()l thc third year English students who studicd Basic Translation Coursc in the first scmcstcr of the 2004 academic ycar by cornparing thcir translalion skills befbrc rnd after the coursc , and to investigate thcir rnistakes in lhe proccss of trinslation fls well as thc ctuses of thcir mislakes. There werc a2 srudents taking part in the study. Two types of rcsclrch inslrumclrts were used during thc coursc data collcction. one was a unit of h.ansliltion exercrscs conccmng afilcle, noun , vocabulary, tcnsc, voice, subject verb aglecrncnt trnd phrasal vcths employed to get students to practicc lhcir lranslarion skills. Thc other was an identical vclsion of pre - test and post - test to acccss their irnploventent.
          It was lound that the students had signrficantly improvcd their translation skills altcr. thc conrplction ol (hc course especially thc itcms of tcnsc and subjcct verb agreement ; howcvcr , their mistlkcs slill rentatned. The itcms in which studcnts matle the most mistakcs wcrc vocalrclary, tcnse,noun! lrricle, subjcct verb agreemcnt. lt is assumed that such mistakes were causcrj b1 lhe dillelellce of thc structures of lboth languages, the wrong interpretation of vocalulary ancl their carclcssncss in translating.
          These lindings significd that developing translation skill was r time - consuming proccs\. Therefbre , it was crucial lbr studcnts to spend more time devcloping their skills. In order to develrp the skills , other aspects of English such as thc use of context clues , grammar , and diffbrent structurcs between Thai and English should be takcn into consideration.
