An Analysis of the Thai Youth Growth Mindset Notion Through A Structure-Agency Framework

Abstract

This academic article aims to utilizes sociological perspectives and frameworks from Structure-Agency Theory to further the analysis of the structural production of the youth growth mindset notion. Based on a broad review of research on Thai education, we found that many studies view children, youth, parents, and teachers as individualized agents who they evaluate on the basis of personalized quality indicators and characteristics. However, research in Thai society that takes on a structural analysis approach to explain how social institutions and social policy contributes the production of the youth growth mindset is still very limited.


The results of the analysis revealed that: In order to move towards a more effective growth mindset framework, students, parents, and teachers cannot be viewed as only agents, but must also be considered as constitutive parts of educational policies as reflected through school curriculum, teaching lessons, and activities that all form a part of a larger social structure. Furthermore, many of the aforementioned agents interact to recycle rules and resources and ultimately reproduce the social structure in practice.
