Ethnicity and Tourism: The Commodification of Ethnic Group in Sa Pa, Vietnam
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to study and present the commodification of ethnic tourism in Sa Pa, Vietnam. This phenomenon has resulted from the expansion and development of Sa Pa, Vietnam since the French colonial era, which connected the town to the outside world and led to rapid development, especially ethnic tourism. Following the implementation of the “Doi Moi” (Đổi Mới) (New Change) economic policy, the Vietnam government placed increasing importance on traveling as a means of presenting an identity that reflects Vietnam. Consequently, ethnicity has been used as the capital for tourism, shaping a memorable image of tourism through ethnicity. This has attracted tourists seeking authentic experiences and a deeper understanding of the region. As a result, Sapa, Vietnam has gained widespread recognition, and ethnicity tourism has contributed significantly to economic value and income generation.
