บทคัดย่อ
การเกื้อกูลกันเป็นสิ่งที่เห็นได้ไม่มากนักในความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างจักรวรรดิอังกฤษกับ มิชชันนารีในอินเดีย หากแต่ความหวาดระแวงที่มีต่อกันเป็นสิ่งที่มองเห็นได้อย่างเด่นชัด ผลประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจทำให้อังกฤษต้องวางตัวไม่ให้ถูกมองว่าเข้าข้างมิชชันนารีและบางกรณีก็ไปสนับสนุน กิจกรรมของศาสนาท้องถิ่นอินเดียเสียด้วยซ้ำ แม้ว่าอังกฤษจะเข้มงวดเรื่องการดำเนินกิจกรรมของ
มิชชันนารีเพียงใดก็หลีกไม่พ้นความขัดแย้งหรือบางกรณีพัฒนาไปถึงความรุนแรงไปได้ ดังเช่นกรณี ประชาชนชาวอินเดียผู้นับถือศาสนาฮินดูกับมิชชันนารีเกิดข้อขัดแย้งกันในเมืองมัทราส เป็นต้น บทความมุ่งนำเสนอความขัดแย้งที่เกิดขึ้นในอินเดียยุคอาณานิคมอังกฤษต่อกรณีการเข้ามาของเหล่ามิชชันนารี โดยความขัดแย้งที่เกิดขึ้นมี 2 กรณี คือ ความขัดแย้งระหว่างจักรวรรดิอังกฤษกับมิชชันนารี และความ ขัดแย้งหรือรุนแรงระหว่างชาวอินเดียกับมิชชันนารีและชาวอินเดียผู้เปลี่ยนมานับถือศาสนาคริสต์
