Civic Education in Germany

Abstract
This study aims to explore civic / citizenship education in schools in Germany and use the findings to make a recommendation to improve civic education in Thailand. The research used document analysis, literature review, and interviews as a research method. The study finds that civic / citizenship education in Germany is one of the most effective in the world. Building on decentralization principles, each state is independently responsible for state schools’ pedagogical curricular. However, all the states agree on promoting a common standard of democracy, human rights, and unity. At the secondary grade: 5 - 12 / 13 the students have democracy education along with other supporting subjects such as history, media, and religion. History is taught honestly and points out the lessons learned from the past. Media study focuses on encouraging the students to pay attention to history while staying up - to - date with current events by using critical thinking skills. Religious study is open for different beliefs, faiths, and unbelievers to promote living together in peace. Moreover, civic / citizenship in Germany also emphasizes democratic practice by including in and out of school activities which are supported by public and private sectors.
