The development of higher education in Thailand can be traced back to the late nineteenth century when King Chulalongkorn or King Rama V pursued modernization of the country and pushed for higher education reform. Eight professional foundation schools in civil service training, medicine, education, and law were subsequently established. In 1917, Chulalongkorn University was the first established university in the country. Since the Cold War period, under the influence of the United States and globalization, Thailand began to internationalize its higher education system, in order to meet new demands. After more than a quarter-century of internationalization, what is the state of Thailand's higher education system? This article reviews and attempts to analyze Thailand's efforts towards internationalization from the concepts of the triangle of coordination and policy transfer/borrowing.
