People's Decisions to Selection of Local Leaders in San Maha Phon Sub-District, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province

Abstract
This article explored people's decisions to selection of local leaders in San Maha Phon Sub-District, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province for studying people's perception and understanding of Duties according to legal regulations and social aspects and responsibilities of local administrators and council members, and investigating the expectations of the people towards local administrators and council members. This is qualitative research using a semi-structured interview, small group discussion, and participatory observation for collecting data. Key informants were representatives of local government leaders, representatives from the government agencies, private and people, 96 representatives.
The finding of the study revealed that people have little awareness of the legal roles and responsibilities of local leaders but they were aware of their roles and responsibilities in society quite a lot. Furthermore, people have expectations of local leaders consisting of having explicit ideas and vision, to become a local leader with knowledge and skills in community management and development, to become a local leader capable of managing conflicts in the community, and to apply good governance principles to themselves and to work for the community.
