The evolution of classical guitar and guidelines for teaching classical guitar practice course in higher education

Classical guitar has been continuously receiving attention to study as a curriculum in higher education. The research about teaching development of this practical subject is essential for the development of the relevant departments. This study aims to study the evolution of Classical Guitar and to be the guideline for teaching the Classical Guitar practice course in higher education. Data were collected from documents, group dialogue with music scholars, students, musicians, and interested people along with responses from a set of questionnaires. Results of the study revealed that guitar was more developed in the 15Th to 16th centuries and largely influenced by “Vihuela”. In 17th to the 18th century, the roles of guitar developed further. Later, in 18th to 19th centuries, history shows that groups of Italian guitarists had traveled and performed music throughout Europe which resulted in the “golden age of classical guitar” in the 19th and the 20th century. In terms of the guideline for developing classical guitar skills, results indicated that the contents and teaching objectives should be related to the curriculum contents established by external music institutes, for example; Trinity Music London, ABRSM, Yamaha Music School, Suzuki Method, etc. and the complements in the individual skills of learners. In addition, educational institutes should adjust the contents to match with the institutes’ philosophies and principles to ensure better development. Data of this study can be used in drafting teaching contents using TQF 3 for the subject of classical guitar practice which adheres to the standard criteria for undergraduate qualifications for the Program of Fine Arts 2015.
