Abstract
The study of “A Role of Online Media in Reporting News of Violence against Children”, which is a quantitative research, aims to 1) Study the role of online media in reporting news of violence against children under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and 2) Study the role of online media in presenting news photos of violence against children under the CRC. The concepts of the rights of children, the concepts of journalism ethics, and the theory of social functionalism of new media are used as frameworks in this study. The researchers use the method of content analysis by selecting facebook pages of three online newspapers, Khaosod, Thairath, and Posttoday, as samples. The study was conducted during the period of six months from July 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017.
The role of online media in reporting news of violence against children under the CRC is found to be undesirable. The level of non-function/dysfunction and malfunction is higher than desired. The study finds that 80.20% of news reports do not respect human dignity of children while 5.67% use disrespectful or insulting languages, 3.91% violate children’s privacy or reveal information that could be harmful to children, and 0.13% use exaggerated headlines that violate the rights of children. On the other hand, 6.05% of online news reports on violence against children protect children’s privacy, 3.53% respect human dignity of children, 2.14% use appropriate headlines, and 0.13% use polite languages that promoted engagement.
In terms of presenting news photos of violence against children under the CRC, the study finds that the role of online media is desirable and well-functioned. 54.22% of news reports use photos that respect human dignity of children, 5.67% use photos that are not indecent, obscene, or risky while 0.00% use photos that are respectful to race, religion, and ethnicity. On the other hand, 36.57% of the reports still use photos that disrespect human dignity of children, 3.03% use photos that are indecent, obscene, or risky, and 0.50% use photos that are disrespectful to race, religion, and ethnicity.
