This creative research explores the integration of contemporary Thai art and new media art through the installation "The Archetype and the Avant-Garde: Luminous Journey," a collaboration between the researcher and Professor Preecha Thaothong, National Artist. The objectives were to (1) study the creation of aesthetic experiences through waiting and natural phenomena, (2) develop an integration between traditional Thai art and modern technology, and (3) analyze the artwork's impact on viewers' perception and awareness.
The research employed a mixed-method approach, combining creative research and qualitative research methodologies. The study developed a generative art system using water drops to control image projection on water surfaces, integrated with contemporary Thai paintings reflecting Thai social development across different eras. The exhibition was held at Lalanta Fine Art from April 29 to June 7, 2023. Data collection involved non-participant observation and in-depth interviews with art industry experts, including gallery executives, curators, academics, artists, and art enthusiasts.
The findings revealed that (1) creating waiting experiences through natural phenomena can stimulate contemplation and awareness among viewers, particularly regarding uncertainty and change in the digital society, (2) the integration of traditional Thai art with modern technology can create new dimensions in presenting cultural heritage through interactions between viewers, artworks, and natural phenomena, and (3) the work generated aesthetic and perceptual impacts leading to questions about social and cultural changes, especially concerning the balance between traditional values and digital transformation. This research presents a new approach to developing contemporary Thai art that combines technology and nature with traditional wisdom, contributing to the future development of Thailand's contemporary art scene.
