The Allure of Silhouette Photography for Communication

Abstract

This article aims to describe the techniques of silhouette photography for communicative purposes.  The mode of the photograph, exposure, and composition are the three most important elements. First, consider the photographic mode. The photographer can use practically any desired mode; it all depends on how the tale is told. Photographers, for example, employ shutter speed priority mode (mode S/TV) to freeze the moment and aperture priority mode (mode AV/A) to create depth of field effects. Second, except for the sun, the photographer must measure the exposure at the brightest spot in the picture. Third, the essential rule of thirds composition can be used for landscape photography; for portrait photography, the model should not squeeze their arms toward the body the model must post the body to reveal their figure in an interesting form. Fourth, silhouette for communication, silhouette simply shows the two-dimensional structure that the audience must imagine-which will be amenable to life experiences and stories.
