A Scaffolding without Restoration: Power of Desire in the Pre-Printing Age of Southern Thai Literature during the 1897s - 1917s

Abstract
This article studies the traditional southern literature during the 1897s-1917s by connecting with the historical context to analyze the relationships between social, political, and economic changes affecting social consciousness and the identity of people. The study found that the provincial administration in the early B.E. 2460s brought the Southern region into modernity of Siam/Thailand. Then, modern space and time have tightened the power relations between the South and the capital more conveniently, faster, and more stably. Traditional southern literature presented that modernity has opened up the space of desires in the minds of the Southerners and has provided opportunities and options in life, resulting in people being able to make progress. Thus, this has caused a change in awareness of self and others.
