Factors Affecting the Decision to Work as a Traditional Thai Massage Therapists for Health in the Central Business District of Bangkok

Abstract
This research aimed to (1) examine the level of personal characteristics of working in the central business district of Bangkok, (2) investigate the level of social support factors influencing these Traditional Thai Massage Therapists, (3) assess the level of their career choices in Thai massage, and (4) identify the personal characteristic factors and social support factors affecting their decision to pursue a career in traditional Thai massage for health. The sample consisted of 400 traditional Thai massage therapists. Data were collected using questionnaires, and various statistical methods were applied including; frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results showed that most traditional Thai massage therapists in Bangkok’s central business district were female, aged between 36 and 45, and had more than five years of work experience. Most of them earned an average monthly income of 15,000 baht or more, reflecting stability and expertise in their profession. Regarding personal characteristic, factor, such as practical experience, aptitude, and professional knowledge were at a high level. Among the social support factors, income and benefits were more influential than family support and societal values. Overall, the career choice in traditional Thai massage for health was rated at high level. Aptitude for the profession, personal characteristics, practical experience, and income and benefits were key factors that significantly influenced the decision to pursue a career in this field.
