Abstract

Background and Objectives: An appropriate cost accounting system is essential for accurate cost analysis, effective selling price determination, and sustainable business competitiveness. Community enterprises play an important role in local economic development; however, inadequate knowledge of accounting principles and cost analysis can limit their ability to determine actual production costs and establish appropriate selling prices. Community enterprise groups in Khok Muang Subdistrict, Khao Chaison District, Phatthalung Province, faced challenges in accounting practices and cost analysis, resulting in difficulties in making informed pricing decisions. This study aimed to develop knowledge and practical skills in accounting and cost analysis among community enterprise members through a participatory learning approach.
Methods: The study involved 30 members from seven community enterprise groups in Khok Muang Subdistrict, Khao Chaison District, Phatthalung Province. A participatory approach was implemented through theoretical training, practical workshops, and follow-up evaluation. The activities focused on developing participants’ knowledge of accounting and cost analysis and improving their ability to apply these principles to business operations. Changes in knowledge scores and accounting accuracy were assessed before and after the intervention, with accounting practices followed up over a three-month period. Participants’ satisfaction with the accounting book format was also considered.
Results: The average knowledge score increased from 5.23 before the intervention to 15.83 after training, representing a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.05). Accounting accuracy increased from 30% to 85% within three months, indicating improvements in the application of accounting and cost analysis knowledge. Participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the accounting book format. Regarding business outcomes, three community enterprise groups were able to determine costs and selling prices appropriately, while the remaining four groups established selling prices above the appropriate level, creating additional margins that could be allocated to promotional activities during periods of intense market competition.
Application of this Study: The findings can be applied to the development of practical accounting training programs and appropriate accounting tools for community enterprises. Participatory learning, practical exercises, and continued follow-up can support members in recording transactions, analyzing costs, and making more informed pricing decisions. The approach may also serve as a model for strengthening accounting capacity among other community enterprise groups with similar needs.
Conclusions: The participatory approach contributed to improved accounting and cost analysis knowledge, greater accounting accuracy, and enhanced pricing practices among the participating community enterprises. Integrating training with practical application and follow-up evaluation may help strengthen financial management and support sustainable business competitiveness.
