Background : The objective of this study is to
explore and gather information about traditional folk
healer’ s e.g. their personal histories, specialization,
aspect of diagnosis and methods of treatment from 50
local healer in Phatthalung Province. Methodology :
The study was carried out by in-depth interview,
observation, record, and practice about the treatment
pattern and technique in a sample group of 50 folk
healers in 11 amphoe of Phatthalung Province. The
data obtained were analyzed quantitatively anddescriptive statistics. The results reveal the present of
29 males and 21 females. Most of them were specialize
as orthopedists/osteopaths (31.94%) and midwife/
pre- and post–natal care (20.83%). The most folk
healers in aged group 71-80 years are not licensed
professional in Thai traditional medicine. That
experience of treatment more than 10 years. The folk
healers had condensed into a curative treatment
because someone in their family as folk healer and
they are interested helping others. In the treatment of
traditional knowledge that has been passed down from
ancestors. The diagnosis start form medical history
taking, physical examination and answer questions
from relatives. The art of treatment varies, according
to their specialties, mostly using herbs or herbal
formulations as the medication and synergy by
massage. The folk healers have no recorded history of
the patient. The database obtained from this project is
current as of the year 2015-2016. This study found a
variation in the treatment of folk healers. The folk
healers are old-aged. Moreover, the present study
found that the knowledge of folk healers was not
recorded, so these wisdoms would be disappeared
together with the folk healers in the same time.
Therefore, this valuable knowledge and traditional
should regain of awareness of the public on the folk
healer’s wisdom by the government and the private
sectors. An attempt to revive Thai Traditional
Medicine, it will fully become part of health care
system again by the turn of the next century.
