Abstract

The objective of this research was to study career development of the homeless using qualitative research method.  Sample group included 16 male and female homeless living in Bangkok and being served by Screening and Assistance Center for the Underprivileged (Ban Imjai) under Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, both employed and unemployed status, age between 18-60 years old.  Findings revealed that career development of the homeless in Bangkok was different from Super’s theory of vocational development theory since the growth stage to career world stage without the chance of self-concept exploration.  We had found significant difference in career maintenance stage.  Although the homeless had entered their career world since their growth stage, they still had no career security because the homeless living in Bangkok usually had life crisis during their childhood and adulthood.  There was no social mechanism to support risk group of people to handle or manage their life crisis.  That was why they could not appropriately perform their duties in different ages and became homeless.  It was highly necessary to develop assistance model for the homeless and people in risk group so that they could develop their career path appropriately in term of prevention, correction, careful monitoring and potential development.
