Essential Skills and Skills-enhancing Activities for Muslim Youths at the Higher Education Level in the 3 Southern Border Provinces

This research paper identifies essential skills and skills-enhancing activities for Muslim youths in higher education in the three southernmost provinces. This study used a qualitative case study methodology. The research tools included in-depth interviews, group discussions, and
participant and non-participant observations. 41 key informants consisted of 1) executives, 2) advisors, 3) lectures, 4) leaders of student organizations, 5) students, and 6) alumni. Data analysis comprised 1) organizing the data, 2) visualizing the data, and 3) generating conclusions
and interpretation. A triangular method was used to determine data validity and reliability. The results indicated that 1) problems and life adaptation of Muslim youths are dimensional, 2) the essential life skills for them include cultural skills, self-management skills, language and
communication skills, learning and problem-solving skills, and emotional management skills, and 3) giving students opportunity to find their own path, fostering their understanding of cultural diversity, and developing their potential for world-wide discovery are suggested skills enhancing activities.
