Roles of Academic Advisors and the Expectations of Traditional Thai Medicine Students, Prince of Songkla University

Abstract

The goals of this research were to study and compare opinion of students to the role of academic advisors. Responses were collected from two hundred eighty-one undergraduate student year 1st- 4th in 2016 of the Faculty of Traditional Thai Medicine, Prince of Songkla University. The instrument was a questionnaire of the role of academic advisors which the coefficient of reliability was 0.96 and a questionnaire of students’ expectations of the role of academic advisors where the coefficient of reliability was 0.97. Data was analyzed by frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation, T-test, F-test, and LSD. The results showed that students’ opinions on the role of academic advisors including counseling, knowledge, skills, and personality of advisors were at elevated levels as well as the expectations of roles as academic advisors and personality of advisors being at the highest level. Analysis of the expectations of counseling also proved to be at an elevated level. The comparison between students’ opinions toward roles of academic advisors to the expectations of the roles of academic advisors found no variance of student sex for the opinions on the role of academic advisors and the expectations of the role of academic advisors based on a .05 level significance level.  Differences in student academic levels scored at a .05 level of significance, for the expectations of the role of academic advisors, but differences in roles of academic advisors was at a .05 level of significance. In conclusion, comparison of roles of academic advisors to expectations of students to the roles of academic advisors, was at differences of .05 level significance level.
