Abstract

This article focused on the study of "otherness" that appeared in the film and explored the intertextuality of characters with real social conditions presented in the 2019 Academy Award-winning film for Best Picture, "Green Book". The film was studied under the concepts of marginalization process and of intertextuality using qualitative research method in obtaining study results by both textual analysis and document analysis. From the study, it was found that the otherness built into the film reflecting true social context that occurred during an era in the United States, affecting its large population back then, as well as building myths against the black people. In terms of intertextuality, it was found that films presenting true stories usually reflected only cirtain images of the actuality that appeared at a certain time in history. On the other hand, when being brought up as a film trying to reflect or tell some parts of that actuality, the true images were picked up partially and conveyed through a modern thinking process, only trying to paint a positive picture of the story.
