The objectives of the present study are 1) to investigate people's level of waste management knowledge and understanding and 2) to examine people's level of waste management knowledge and understanding as classified by their personal, economic, and social factors. The data were collected quantitatively through the application of questionnaire. The population in this study consisted of people living on Koh Samui, Surat Thani Province. Having employed the simple sampling technique, the sample size was determined according to proportion of the population, and the minimum sample size of each sub-district was set at 30 people, thereby making a total sample size of 516. The figure includes 150 people from community in areas that emphasize trading, services, and agricultures (e.g., Ang Thong Sub-District, Lipa Noi Subdistrict), 165 people from culture-community areas (e.g., Taling Ngam Subdistrict, Na Mueang Subdistrict, and Maret Sub-district), and another 201 people from modern tourism areas. The obtained data were analyzed quantitatively using statistical tools, e.g, mean, standard deviation, independent sample t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The findings revealed that the respondents demonstrated high level of overall knowledge and understanding of solid waste management, waste and waste disposal, as well as waste reduction. It was also disclosed that their level of knowledge and understanding of solid waste management in terms of waste and waste disposal differed according to their educational level. Further, there were statistical differences in terms of waste sorting when classified by personal factors such as age and marital status. Also, people's knowledge and understanding of waste and waste disposal as well as waste sorting differed statistically when considering their individual factors such as economic status, social classes, occupations, monthly income, and locations.
