Abstract
Although transport planning and land use
planning are closely correlated, in practice knowledge
about the relationship between land use and transport
is rarely used and has been of interest for less than two
decades. This study compared research in The
Thammasat University’s online public access catalog
with that of Shaw (2009), in terms of concepts or
theories, relationship patterns, scales of studied area,
and methods used in transportation - land use related
research. Only one of the three different concepts or
theories purposed by Shaw was used in engineering
studies, namely the four-step travel demand model,
which describes the influence of land use on transportation. In contrast, studies in urban planning have used concepts of urban planning and design and consumer behavior. Almost all previous research has used neighborhood and city scales of analysis, which allowed researchers to collect primary data, particularly at individual level, typically questionnaire or interview. Data analysis is largely confined to descriptive statistics, while multivariate statistics have had limited use. There are differences between the concepts or theories used in empirical research and in Shaw. Based upon the classification of concepts or theories purposed by Shaw, most of the presented articles were not complied with the suggestion. In addition some of the reviewed research tried to refer to the transportation – land use issues, but they were actually focused to other aspects.
